Onion cough syrup is a traditional remedy that’s been used for generations to help soothe coughs and sore throats.

Here’s a simple recipe you can try:

  • 1 large onion (yellow or red)
  • 1 cup honey (preferably raw and organic)
  • Optional: 1-2 cloves of garlic, 1 lemon, 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  1. Prepare the Onion:
    • Peel the onion and cut it into thin slices or small chunks.
  2. Layer the Ingredients:
    • In a clean, dry jar, place a layer of onion slices at the bottom.
    • Pour a layer of honey over the onion slices, just enough to cover them.
    • If you’re using garlic, lemon, or ginger, you can add a layer of these as well.
    • Continue layering onion slices and honey (and other ingredients, if using) until you’ve used up the onion. Make sure the final layer is honey.
  3. Rest:
    • Cover the jar with a lid and let it sit at room temperature for 8-12 hours, or overnight. During this time, the onion will release its juices, which will mix with the honey to create the syrup.
  4. Strain:
    • After letting it sit, you can strain the mixture to remove the onion pieces, or you can leave them in if you don’t mind them. Pour the syrup into a clean jar or bottle for storage.
  5. Storage:
    • Store the onion cough syrup in the refrigerator. It should keep for up to a week.
  • Take 1-2 teaspoons of the syrup every few hours as needed to soothe a cough or sore throat.
  • Garlic: Adds additional antibacterial and antiviral properties.
  • Lemon: Adds vitamin C and a pleasant flavor.
  • Ginger: Adds anti-inflammatory properties and a warming sensation.

This homemade onion cough syrup is a natural remedy and can be a comforting treatment for mild coughs and colds. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional.
